65th Primetime Emmy Award Predictions: Comedy

COMEDY SERIES:

The Big Bang Theory, CBS

Girls, HBO

Louie, FX

Modern Family, ABC

30 Rock, NBC

Veep, HBO

Who Deserves to Win: Modern Family. I’ve never watched some of these shows (“Louie”, “Veep”) so I can only judge from what I’ve seen. Whenever I catch “Modern Family” it always garners a laugh.

Who Will Win: 30 Rock. Being the show’s final bow, voters might turn sentimental and grant them the statue.

LEAD ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Jason Bateman, Arrested Development, Netflix

Louis C.K., Louie, FX

Don Cheadle, House of Lies, Showtime

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes, Showtime

Jim Parsons, Big Bang Theory, CBS

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock, NBC

Who Deserves to Win: Alec Baldwin. The only highlight of an overrated comedy, Baldwin stands out as the saving grace of the now defunct series.

Who Will Win: Jim Parsons. Fans and critics have long praised Parsons cerebral comedic abilities; they might reward him. Bateman is a long-shot after the ill-received return of “Arrested Development” online.

LEAD ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Lena Dunham, Girls, HBO

Laura Dern, Enlightened, HBO

Tiny Fey, 30 Rock, NBC

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation, NBC

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep, HBO

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie, Showtime

Who Deserves to Win: Amy Poehler. Her skill speaks for itself.

Who Will Win: Lena Dunham. Voters might swing for the “hip” vote with the controversial Dunham, who critics are awestruck by for some bizarre reason.

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Adam Driver, Girls, HBO

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family, ABC

Ed O'Neill, Modern Family, ABC

Ty Burrell, Modern Family, ABC

Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live, NBC

Tony Hale, Veep, HBO

Who Deserves to Win: Ty Burrell. Funny and underappreciated his characterization of the affable Phil Dunphy is heartwarming.

Who Will Win: Ty Burrell. Read above.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory, CBS

Jane Lynch, Glee, Fox

Sofia Vergara, Modern Family, ABC

Julie Bowen, Modern Family, ABC

Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie, Showtime

Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock, NBC
Anna Chlumsky, Veep, HBO

Who Deserves to Win: Jane Lynch. The sharpest tongue on TV as Sue Sylvester, Lynch is masterful in a role that walks the tightrope of hilarity and dramatic resonance.

Who Will Win: Julie Bowen. There’s no reason to suspect the Emmy veteran won’t succeed again.

GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Molly Shannon, Enlightened, HBO

Dot-Marie Jones, Glee, Fox

Melissa Leo, Louie, FX

Melissa McCarthy, Saturday Night Live, NBC

Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live, NBC

Elaine Stritch, 30 Rock, NBC

Who Deserves to Win: Dot-Marie Jones. Jones has broken the mold & hearts with her fearless performance of the compassionate Coach Beaste.

Who Will Win: Kristen Wiig. Wiig’s final year on “S.N.L.” should bring the sentiment.

DIRECTING FOR COMEDY SERIES:

Girls, HBO

Glee, Fox

Louie, FX

Modern Family, ABC

30 Rock, NBC

Who Deserves to Win: Glee. Truly one of the most tightly directed series on TV, they deserve the trophy. “Shooting Star” was a definitive high-point for the show’s elaborate direction.

Who Will Win: Girls. The number 1 pick among hipsters, the seedy comedy could take the prize.

GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES:

Bob Newhart, The Big Bang Theory, CBS

Nathan Lane, Modern Family, ABC

Bobby Cannavale, Nurse Jackie, Showtime

Louis C.K., Saturday Night Live, NBC

Justin Timberlake, Saturday Night Live, NBC

Will Forte, 30 Rock, NBC

Who Will Win: Justin Timberlake. He’s on a hot streak and critics always make a big deal about his SNL appearances.

WRITING FOR COMEDY SERIES:

Episodes, Showtime
Louie, FX

The Office, NBC

30 Rock ("Hogcock!"), NBC

30 Rock ("Last Lunch"), NBC

Who Will Win: 30 Rock. Both “30 Rock” and “The Office” had their final season’s this year but the Emmy’s have always been more into “30 Rock”. “Louie” could pull an upset.
