"X-Men: Days of Future Past"
The latest installment in the X-Men franchise centers on Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) travelling back in time to prevent a deadly timeline of events. Seeing the magnificent Ian McKellen face off against Michael Fassbender as both portray Magneto (at different life stages) holds intriguing promise and with Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Bingbing Fan and more set to appear, the project boasts an impressive accumulation of talent.Personally most exciting is the casting of “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage as Dr. Bolivar Trask. Dinklage’s appearance in a film franchise is long overdue, a gem of an opportunity. Seeing the elder Professor X and Magneto unite for the same cause, after several movies spent fighting against one another is another alluring aspect to the fatiguing franchise.
Expectation trepidation rests with the storyline needing to utilize time travel which can be a red flag. It is not necessarily a sign that the franchise is running out of ideas, given it is based off the comic's 1981 storyline. Then there is the appearance of robots. Movies have been reaching automaton overload lately (“Pacific Rim” & “Transformers” etc).
The idea of monster robots is just not all that visually stellar or logical. Another issue is joining the casts of “X-Men: First Class” and the previous “X-Men” films, which could lead to an overload of characters and no depth to their story development. Given the amount of characters jockeying for screen-time, it could be difficult to give the supporting cast a firm 10 minutes.
Concerns aside, buzz has been building for months and initial reviews have been positive. Following “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” might have made pleasing audiences an easier task. Read Eclectic Pop's Full Review by clicking here
"Blended" starring Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore
Adam Sandler re-teams with Drew Barrymore for this blended (get it?) family comedy about single parents that inadvertently end up on the same African vacation together with their kids. The trailer was funny without seeming to give away all the best parts. The biggest selling feature is Sandler and Barrymore, who know how to play off each other with fabulous results. It’s a screen partnership that has served them well, leading to the uber-successful, “Wedding Singer” and “50 First Dates”.It will be interesting to see them in this more adult stage of their lives as both are portraying parents in “Blended”. Based on the trailer their character dynamic is going to be adversarial at first, which should prove humorous. Sandler’s last efforts the mega-raunchy “That’s My Boy” and ensemble based comedy “Grown-Ups 2” were greeted with a critical drubbing but audiences seemed to enjoy them. If you enjoy Sandler (I do) and watching others vacation during your stay-cation, it is worth checking out.
