Best New Bet: A Walk Among the Tombstones
Liam Neeson returns to theaters in this gritty actioner. An adaptation of Lawrence Block’s novel of the same name, the plot revolves around former cop turned P.I., Matthew Scudder (Neeson). When a drug dealer’s (Dan Stevens) wife is kidnapped he hires Scudder to find her, leading to a dark trek into the criminal underworld. This is director Scott Frank’s second feature film. His brilliant 2007 debut “The Lookout” melded an intelligent crime caper with a unique character study. “Walk” has the behind-the-scenes talent to be a quality film and it couldn’t have a better lead than Neeson.
After February’s “Non-Stop”, he
is still on a roll with action thrillers and for good reason, he can still sell vengeful archetypes without growing stagnant as a thespian. Co-starring with Neeson
is Dan Stevens, who is best known for his role on “Downton Abbey” which he infamously
left at the pinnacle of its success.
His role in “Walk” is a far cry from his “Downton” days as the dapper Matthew Crowley and it could be a career influencer to see how he tackles the change in direction. In an interesting bit of trivia Michelle Dockery, who co-starred on “Downton Abbey” with Stevens, also co-starred with Neeson in the aforementioned “Non-Stop”.

Also Opening:
“Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien stars in the heavily anticipated
adaptation of James Dashner’s sci-fi novel “The Maze Runner”. Set in a
post-apocalyptic existence, a teenager (O’Brien) awakens with no memory of his
previous life in the confines of an enclosure surrounded by a maze.
The latest in a long line of similarly themed futuristically grim sagas, “Maze Runner” might lack the levity and romance of its counterparts but its core story seems more determined to find a resolution than the broader themed subject matter of its rivals.

Jason Bateman, Tina Fey and Jane Fonda lead an
ultra-talented ensemble in the dysfunctional family dramedy “This Is Where I
Leave You”. The story centers on four adult siblings who return home to lay their
father to rest. While sitting Shiva, they start to reconnect as a family. If it
can properly utilize the talents of its cast and find the balance between
prickly characters and those with a hidden heart, "This Is Where I Leave You" could prove a worthy watch.
