“Yellowstone” Season 4 is back on Paramount Network, and Episode 3 heated things up in a significant way. One of the big reveals of the night was what happened to Tate after the shocking season premiere. Neither Tate nor Monica got shown after the opening sequence. In the final moments of Episode 3, however, that all changed.

Beware: Spoilers for the “Yellowstone” Season 4 premiere and Season 4, Episode 3 on Paramount Network get discussed below.

How is Tate doing after the events of the Season 4 premiere? “Yellowstone” finally answered that question. If you are new to the show, though, there is some additional context you might benefit from knowing regarding Tate’s state of mind in the latest episode. So, without further ado, here is what you need to know. (For a video recap, watch below.)

What Happened to Tate in Season 4?

The “Yellowstone” Season 4 premiere opens with Monica talking to Kayce on the phone as he gets attacked. He urges Monica to seek cover for herself and Tate. Not long after, Monica and Tate get attacked by a masked man inside of the Dutton house. Monica gets badly injured by the man, and as they struggle, he loses hold of his gun.

Never Miss A Post!

As the attacker attempts to get his weapon, Tate shoots the man with a rifle, saving his mother from certain death. As Tate and Monica make their way to the bunkhouse, they witness the ranch hands taking out the myriad of attackers on the ranch’s property. Tate and Monica are not shown again until Episode 3 of Season 4.

Viewers Finally Get A Tate and Monica Update

Towards the end of the episode, it gets revealed that Monica and Tate have holed up in Kayce and Monica’s room. Tate is staying under the bed in constant survival mode. Kayce, realizing his son needs a dose of tough love, pulls a screaming Tate out from under the bed, holds him, and assures Tate that he is safe. It seems to snap Tate out of it.

Kayce then orders Tate to eat his dinner like a human being at a table. To which Tate readily complies. His parents’ ensuing exchange/argument is far nastier. Monica blames the Dutton ranch for her and Tate’s trauma and declares that she “hates” Kayce. In response, Kayce is empathetic with his wife yet defends his family and the ranch.

Inside Kayce and Monica’s Big Fight

For Monica, it is the final straw. She wants to leave the ranch and return home, presumably back to her grandfather. Will she? My guess is “yes.” Monica’s bitterness and anger are reminiscent of her Season 1/Season 2 falling out with Kayce. In this case, instead of taking the Duttons and her husband’s side, Monica is upset by what their war for survival has cost Tate. He had to kill a man to save his mother’s life.

Monica’s response is not entirely surprising. I was hoping that we could avoid the trope of people getting upset over taking care of would-be-murderers before they could murder their loved ones, but here we are. “Yellowstone” Season 4 is going for it, and it will be interesting to see where it takes Kayce and Monica.

The Boiling Point

Adding to Monica’s anger with Kayce is that this is not the first bad thing that has happened to Tate on “Yellowstone.” The first horrible experience that happened to Tate occurred back in the Season 2 finale. In the penultimate episode, Tate got kidnapped by a neo-Nazi gang hired by Malcolm Beck and his brother to put heat on John.

In response, a group led by John quickly rescues Tate. Sadly, harm has already gotten inflicted on John’s beloved grandson by the time the cavalry arrives. Tate’s head has gotten shaved, and he is hysterical when found before his dad comforts him. Yet, despite the trauma, Tate shows tremendous signs of resilience in “Yellowstone” Season 3 as John helps Tate put his terrible nightmares behind him.

Tate’s hysterical response to Kayce in Season 4, Episode 3 is incredibly reminiscent of his reaction in the Season 2 finale. Hopefully, he can recover the same way. Even if Tate can get past it, will Monica? Tune in to the Paramount Network to see if Monica and Kayce’s marriage survives “Yellowstone” Season 4. New episodes air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount Network, and you will not want to miss it.
