'Yellowstone' Season 4 (So Far): Who Lived? Who Died?

It is the event that every “Yellowstone” fan has been waiting for and for more than a year too. Season 4 of the hit Paramount Network drama has finally arrived and revealed the answers to the two burning questions that heated up the internet. So, in case you missed it, who lives, and who dies when Season 4 begins? Here is the answer.

As you can expect with that intro, spoilers for what happens after the Season 3 finale of “Yellowstone” in Season 4 get discussed beyond this point. So, pull back the reins on your virtual horse if you do not want to know!

To quickly recap, when “Yellowstone” left off ahead of Season 4, John Dutton and two of his children: Beth and Kayce, had gotten targeted for assassination. John was shot on the side of the road while gunmen showed up at Kayce’s office trying to kill him. At her office, Beth’s assistant opened what turned out to be a mail bomb that exploded.

In an unrelated incident, Jimmy got bucked off his horse. He was last spotted lying motionless at the ranch. “Yellowstone” Season 4 accordingly handled the aftermath of who lived and who died. Who lives? Who dies?

By the end of the “Yellowstone” Season 4 premiere, John, Beth, Kayce, and Jimmy were all alive, despite the fateful cliffhanger that sent shockwaves through the fandom. For fans not expecting a lot of carnage, the reveal was far from surprising. John Dutton, his daughter Beth, and his son Kayce are leading fixtures for the series.

As far as non-Duttons go, Jimmy is/was an equally significant presence in the ensemble. Compared to his fellow “Yellowstone” characters, Jimmy’s was the only cliffhanger not related to sinister means. His fate involved a riding accident, more or less, while John, Beth, and Kayce’s fates were tied to assassination attempts.

How did John, Beth, and Kayce survive?

John’s cell phone was the major reason he survived the shooting. Beth’s lack of proximity to the mail bomb saved her, while Kayce’s acumen as a US Navy Seal proved to be his saving skill. Kayce’s survival turned out to be the most climatic of the three.

How did Jimmy survive?

Jimmy’s survival marks the second time in the series’ run that he has had a close call. Since Jimmy getting thrown to his potential death occurred in Season 3, it is fair to say Jimmy had two near-death experiences in one season. “Yellowstone” Season 4 saved his bacon, though.

Who Died?

The only main character to die in “Yellowstone” Season 4 in the aftermath of the attack on the Duttons has been Roarke. Yes, Josh Holloway’s scene-stealing character inexplicably met his demise at the hands of Rip during the premiere. The latter threw a rattlesnake at Roarke’s face, killing him. Rip gave no reason for the slaying. In a killing with a clear motive, John Dutton took out the man who put together the assassination attempts in Season 4, Episode 3.

What This Means Going Forward

“Yellowstone” has not pulled a “Game of Thrones” by killing off key characters. Over the hiatus, this viewer never doubted that John, Beth, Kayce, and Jimmy would survive. It made no sense to lose them. That said, yours truly is still scratching their head over the choice to kill off Josh Holloway’s Roarke.

Roarke brought a breath of fresh air to the show. Unfortunately, “Yellowstone” Season 4 has yet to address why Rip decided to kill Roarke. No evidence of his collusion in the plan to hit the Duttons got shared. So, for now, viewers are left with no answers. Hopefully, Rip will provide them because this is a dark chapter for him.
