'Kho Gaye Hum Kahan' Netflix Movie: Let's Review

Streaming on Netflix, “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan” centers around a scenario that automatically lends itself to a lot of juicy drama. Two guys are best friends with a gorgeous girl, and they are all in their twenties. What could go wrong? Not the thing you would think. What sounds like the recipe for a torrid love triangle never takes any such detour.

All of the trio’s drama lies elsewhere. Ahana (Ananya Panday), Neil (Adarsh Gourav), and Imaad (Siddhant Chaturvedi) are about to embark on a season of change that none of them see coming. And “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan” throws a lot their way. Hence, the title’s English translation: “Where Have We Lost Ourselves?”

Among those asking that question is Ahana when her long-time boyfriend, Rohan (Rohan Gurbaxani), unexpectedly breaks up with her. Neil’s relationship with an influencer takes him to surprising places, personally, professionally, and questionably. Finally, womanizing stand-up comedian Imaad meets a woman who opens his heart to the possibility of the L-word. Love.

It is a lot to take in, including that the trio has zero romantic tension. Their connection is so platonic they could be siblings, which begs the question. Why did the writers choose to make them friends? The main characters being family would have served the story just as well.

It would have dispelled any sense that there might be more bubbling beneath the surface from the start. (Yes. I am hung up on this because I do not think guys and girls can just be friends.) That said, the trio’s friendship leaves “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan” room to feature different parents and parenting styles, which proves a wise choice. 

Now to some other news.

If you are going in expecting a Saturday afternoon romantic drama, be aware that this is a heavier watch than it first appears. Take heed of Netflix’s warning in the upper left-hand corner that describes the content. It is easy to make it through most of the movie and assume Netflix is mistaken.

They are not.

If you can handle its heavy side, what director/co-writer Arjun Varain Singh crafts with “Kho Gaye Hum Kahan” is a powerful film that explores life, friendship, and its intricacies with a stellar cast. The drama is currently streaming on Netflix alongside other Hindi movies.
